From the Editor...

Having cut, colored and styled the heads of Portlanders for the last several years, Julie Ruckman’s learned a thing or two about how we treat our hair—namely, we wouldn’t knowingly put toxins in our bodies, so why would we put them on our scalps? At her new two-chair salon, Ruckman employs healthier, gentler organic alternatives to traditional shampoos and styling creams, including ammonia-free coloring products, vegan essential oils, and sustainable shampoos and conditioners made with natural ingredients native to the Pacific Northwest. Ruckman also offers gluten-free hair care products, and has even designed her waiting area to be inspiring by decorating it with rotating works from local artists. Chad Walsh, 1/9/2014
